So what's all the fuss with the Higgs Boson then?

Firstly, relax. Nowhere in this post am I going to refer to the Higgs Boson as a "God particle" as that is complete and utter tripe, I'm not sure where the name came from (probably the media) but it's utter bullshit :) Also, I did have some pretty Standard Model diagrams that I made, but sadly I'm on a different laptop to the home one at the moment, and it's ancient and won't upload pictures :( Will edit when I get home!!

What is the Higgs Boson?
The Higgs boson is an elementary particle that was potentially discovered on July 4th 2012. It was predicted by the Standard Model of Particle Physics, which consists of 17 particles, the Higgs being one of them, the others being the 6 quarks (up, down, charm, strange, top, bottom), 6 leptons (electron, muon, tau and their corresponding neutrinos), the photon, the gluon and the W and Z bosons. The quarks and leptons are part of a group of particles called fermions. These are the particles that make up the every day matter we see around us (protons and neutrons are made of up and down quarks, which when combined with electrons make atoms). The photon, gluon, W and Z and Higgs are all bosons. These are responsible for all the Universe's forces, except gravity, which as of yet hasn't been worked into the Standard Model. (There's always one that has to be difficult!!). Scientists believe that the Higgs boson is responsible for giving fermions mass.

How would a Higgs boson give fermions mass?
Higgs bosons obey the conservation of energy law, which states that no energy is created or destroyed, but is instead transferred. Firstly, the energy starts out in a gauge boson (photon, gluon, W or Z) that interacts with the Higgs field. This is energy in the form of kinetic energy, or movement. After the gauge boson interacts with the Higgs field, it slows down. The slowing reduces the amount of kinetic energy in the gauge boson. However, this energy cannot be destroyed, so it is instead transferred into mass-energy, which is normal mass that comes from energy. The mass created is what we call a Higgs boson. The amount of mass created comes from Einstein's famous equation E=mc2, which states that mass is equal to a large amount of energy (for example, 1 kilogram is equal to almost 90 petajoules- 90,000,000,000,000,000 J). Since the amount of mass-energy created by the Higgs field is equal to the amount of of kinetic energy that the gauge boson lost by being slowed, energy is conserved.

Independence Day discovery
On 4th July 2012, the two main experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) and CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) both independently reported the existence of a previously unknown particle with a mass of 125 GeV/c2, which is equivalent to about 133 proton masses, and is "consistent with the Higgs boson", and widely believed to be this long-elusive particle. Further work is needed to confirm if this is the case, but the scientific community widely accepts that the particle discovered is indeed the Higgs, as it bears many of the theoretically predicted properties of it.

So why has the Higgs been so elusive for the past 48 years?
The Higgs particle is a very massive particle, and like all large particles, decays almost instantly after its creation (under a septillionth of a second!), so only a very high-energy particle accelerator can observe and record it. Mathematical consistency of the Standard Model requires that anything capable of generating the masses of elementary particles become visible at energies above 1.4 TeV, therefore the LHC (designed  to collide two 7 TeV proton beams, but currently running at 4 TeV each), was built to answer the question of whether the Higgs exists or not.

What if the particle discovered wasn't the Higgs?
Several Higgsless models of the Universe exist, where strongly interacting dynamics rather than an additional field produce the non-zero vacuum expectation value that breaks electroweak symmetry. Some of these mechanisms include:
  • Technicolour- A class of models that attempts to mimic the dynamics of the strong force as a way of breaking electroweak symmetry.
  • Extra-Dimensional Higgsless models- The role of the Higgs field is played by a fifth component of the gauge field.
  • Abbott-Farhi Models- Composite W and Z vector bosons.
  • Top Quark Condesate Theory- A fundamental scalar Higgs field is replaced by a composite field composed of the top quark and its antiquark.
  • The Braid Model- A model of Standard Model particles by Sundance Bilson-Thompson, compatible with loop quantum gravity and similar theories.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer- The Review

Firstly, I'm gonna review the ME3 Multiplayer. I really enjoy it, not gonna lie! I'm a pretty antisocial gamer, I think Mass Effect is the only non-music based game in my collection that is multiplayer. I'm normally that noob who gets in everyone else's way, so spends ages getting really good and then gets mega annoyed with noobs who get in your way (hypocrite I know). I did really enjoy Star Wars: The Old Republic's beta, but at the end of the day, I'm a student not a drug lord, and hence can't afford the subscription fees :P

The multiplayer itself plays quite well, I've heard of glitches but haven't really experienced any myself (do feel free to correct me though!), and after discovering that playing as an Adept I can make Biotic Explosions, I love running around on Silver (can't do Gold unless I'm an Infiltrator so I can go run and hide) killing Atlas's and Banshees and Brutes by myself :D Banshees however, are the new "Chainsaw Man of Resident Evil 4" or "One Winged Angel", as in, as soon as you hear a SHRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK you proceed to shit yourself and run around the battlefield with no hope like an idiot.

I have to say, my least favourite classes are the Engineer and the Soldier. The Soldier class just seems obsolete to be honest. You can build the other classes so they can take the good weapons into battle with minimal weight penalty, and still have the advantage of powers (Biotic Explosions and Tech Bursts ftw!). My favourite classes to play have to be the Adept, Sentinel and Vanguard (what can I say, I like biotics! SPACE MAGIC!).

Speaking of classes, I should probably explain the system. There are 6 classes to choose from; Adept, Soldier, Sentinel, Engineer, Infiltrator and Vanguard. Each class is then split into 4 races, which have different combinations of powers from the single player game. For example, a Human Adept has Shockwave, Singularity and Warp- whereas a Drell Adept has Reave, Pull and Cluster Grenade.

Characters can be colour customised, and you pick which points you want to put where, but beyond that the customisation is pretty sparce. You can pick weapon loadout etc. but can't change facial features on the alien species, and all the human avatars wear helmets. And, if you're like me and spend hours upon hours in character creators, then this is a bad thing. Still, I have my imagination I suppose! Also good is the fact that Humans have male and female avatars with the same powers! The days of gender discrimination are over for all those girl gamers out there!

Playable species are: Human (all classes), Asari (Adept & Vanguard), Drell (Adept & Vanguard), Krogan (Soldier & Sentinel), Turian (Soldier & Sentinel), Quarian Female (Engineer & Infiltrator) and Salarian (Engineer & Infiltrator)

Past Free DLC Packs
If you haven't downloaded these already, you really should. They're FREE FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! Everybody knows that if it's free you take it. DUH!

The first of these packs is the Resurgence Pack. This adds two new maps (Firebase Condor and Firebase Hydra), three new weapons (Striker Assault Rifle, Kishock Harpoon Gun and Geth Plasma SMG), four new consumables (Strength Enhancer, Targeting VI, Stabilization Module and Shield Power Cells) and six new characters (Asari Justicar, Krogan Battlemaster, Batarian Soldier, Batarian Sentinel, Geth Infiltrator and Geth Engineer)

An interesting thing to note about the Geth (although I haven't experienced this myself as I haven't unlocked them) is that they have a hive mind, being machines and all, and APPARENTLY this comes across in the Multiplayer!

The next pack is the Rebellion Pack. Again this adds two maps (Firebase Goddess and Firebase Jade), three new weapons (Cerberus Harrier, Reegar Carbine, Kryase Sniper Rifle), a new game mode in which you have to retrieve a high priority package and deliver it pack to a pick-up point (it's essentially a one-sided game of Capture the Flag), a new equipment slot called a "Gear Slot" which doesn't run out like the consumable items, and six more characters (Vorcha Soldier, Vorcha Sentinel, Quarian Male Engineer, Quarian Female Infiltrator, Phoenix Adept and Phoenix Vanguard). The Phoenix characters mentioned here aren't some new elusive species, they're Ex-Cerberus biotics from Project Phoenix, hence the name!

Mass Effect Multiplayer: Earth Pack
The Earth Pack will be released on July 17th on PS3 in North America, and Xbox 360 & PC worldwide, and on July 18th on PS3 in Europe. This will feature three new maps (Firebase Rio, Firebase Vancouver and Firebase London), three new weapons (Piranha Assault Shotgun, Acolyte Pistol, Typhoon Assault Rifle), a new game mode which involves escorting a high priority target to an extraction point, six new characters (N7 Destroyer, N7 Paladin, N7 Demolisher, N7 Slayer, N7 Shadow and N7 Fury), and a new "Platinum" game difficulty for those of you (weirdos) who didn't think Gold was hard enough (SERIOUSLY?!). And although these characters are all Human, they do play differently to the regular human characters and the Phoenix characters from the Rebellion DLC, and to be honest, they look rather interesting. In the image below, I see one character looks a bit like a Quarian, one looks a bit like a Phantom and another has a Shadow-Brokeresque shield!

Anyway, this time I really am going, no more blogging for me tonight! I leave you with this:

Garrus used to be a space adventurer like you...

Opening of Talk Dorky To Me!

Hello readers and welcome to Talk Dorky To Me! Just a quick post as it's 10:55 PM and I've had a busy day today.... okay, that's a lie, I've totally just been doing Thieves Guild jobs on Skyrim with my Argonian character (she's called Hides-In-Shade, and she's ferocious with a dagger :P). Anyway, I digress xD This blog is basically for anybody who likes sci-fi, fantasy, Marvel comics (not really a fan of DC but if I see some important news I'll probably cover it), the occasional bit of rock music and of course, gaming. Where would I be without covering any games? Nowhere, that's where! Stop talking to yourself Jake, start talking to the readers :P

Also I am extremely sorry, but I am well aware of the ongoing "Star Wars VS Star Trek" hostilities, and as a member of Wookieepedia I'm afraid it's my duty not to cover any Trek on this blog. And that's the end of it, no arguing!!

Aaaaaaand I'm back with you xD Basically, anyone who is anybody knows that San Diego Comic Con (SDCC for short) is coming up this weekend and I am reeeeeeeeally excited!!! Gutted that I can't afford plane tickets and hotel bookings, otherwise I would totally be in San Diego right now! But I will be on the Internet like a hawk keeping my eyes open for any interesting developments, so keep your eyes peeled! Things to look out for in the coming days:

  • A handy little post on the Higgs Boson for all you particle physics nerds out there!
  • MEGASPOILERS from Comic-Con. Okay, probably not spoilers on that grand of a scale, but still! COMIC CON!
  • Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer DLC (Earth Pack)
  • My review of Pokemon Black 2 (which I've been playing in Japanese for a while now, and been keeping up on the coverage on www.serebii.net (if you're a PokeFan and haven't checked this site out I highly recommend it!)
And that's all for tonight folks, a short post I know, and I haven't really covered anything but I wanted to get this blog out in the open! Will be tweeting a link to some major players in the geek community with the hopes they will retweet and get the word out!!

Peace out and May the Force be with you :)

Jake :)
